It’s a common celebrity story and has been told in nearly every episode of the popular television series “E! True Hollywood Stories.” The young celebrity-to-be needs money after moving out to California to chase her dreams of becoming an actress and poses nude for an obscure (or not-so-obscure) adult men’s magazine. After she hits in big on the silver screen in mainstream movies and several years have passed, she is greeted with the news that the nude photos that she has tried to forget posing for so long ago are now the talk of the nation and are being seen by anyone with internet access.

Photos of celebrities in the nude are extremely popular particularly for viewing online. The explosive popularity and immense reach of the World Wide Web has made damage control for celebrities and their agents nearly impossible when the pictures get posted online. They are quickly dispersed all over so that they are downloaded by thousands of people almost as soon as they are uploaded.

But the case of the young celebrity needing the money isn’t the only time that nude pictures of them get leaked. Unscrupulous paparazzi are paid a great deal of money by publications and websites for catching young starlets sunning topless on their own property. One recent example of this involved Jennifer Aniston, who was sunbathing without a top on her on property. Paparazzi climbed a fence, snapped the picture, and sold it to a publication. Aniston was able to sue to keep the images from being distributed but hers was a case of luck and good timing.

Paparazzi also catch the stars at inopportune moments. After her divorce from Kevin Federline, Britney Spears was known to be hitting the town with Paris Hilton to blow off some steam. On one occasion it was proven that Ms. Spears preferred not to wear underwear under her very tight and very short skirts when a camera caught her private parts being exposed as she got out of Paris’ car.

The potential damage that can occur to a celebrity’s career when nude photographs of them are leaked varies with the reputation of the celebrity and the persona that they exude. While no one would be necessarily surprised to hear of Lindsey Lohan being caught in the buff while out partying it up on the town, a shockwave would ripple through the Hollywood hills if a more reserved and classy celebrity such as Julia Roberts were to bare it all these days.
